Living in the Spirit: Understanding Your New Identity in Christ

Living in the Spirit: Understanding Your New Identity in Christ

When we talk about living in the Spirit, it's not just about supernatural encounters like speaking in tongues or having visions. While these experiences are part of our walk with God, living in the Spirit goes much deeper—it's about allowing the Holy Spirit to transform every aspect of our lives.

What Does It Mean to Live in the Spirit?

In Galatians 5:25, Paul writes, "If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit." This verse presents a challenge: if we claim to be regenerated by the Holy Spirit, if we claim that God lives in us, then we must walk accordingly.
When the Holy Spirit comes to live in us, He brings with Him:

  • Love
  • Joy
  • Peace
  • Patience
  • Kindness
  • Goodness
  • Faithfulness
  • Gentleness
  • Self-control

These fruits of the Spirit aren't things we need to pray and fast for—they're already available to every believer. The question is whether we're tapping into them and allowing them to be evident in our interactions with others.

How Should Christians Reflect Their Faith?

Our actions should reflect our faith and relationship with God. If we claim to have been renewed by the Holy Spirit, our words and deeds should bear witness to this change. Unfortunately, many Christians wear their faith "on their sleeve" but leave others confused by their actions.
Living in the Spirit means:

Practicing Forgiveness in Every Situation

Jesus made it clear that forgiveness is non-negotiable for believers. When Peter asked how many times he should forgive, Jesus answered "seventy times seven"—meaning there's no limit to extending forgiveness.
Who has offended you? Who has hurt you? Who has taken something that belongs to you? As a believer seeking God's blessing, have you forgiven them?

Showing Compassion to People

Jesus was "moved with compassion" when He saw crowds of people who were "like sheep without a shepherd." People who are disconnected from God are "dead in trespasses and sin"—they "have no spiritual life." Our duty as recipients of God's grace is to extend compassion to them.

Extending Grace to Others

We're always faced with choices between good and bad. Even in the darkest moments when nobody is watching, God sees the choices we make. Righteous people do righteous things—not because it's difficult, but because it's their nature.
Christ extended grace to us when we didn't qualify for it. As the Bible says, "While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." We're called to extend that same grace to others.

Understanding Our New Identity in Christ

One of the most significant challenges believers face today is a misguided identity in Christ. The secret to living a fulfilled Christian life is understanding and embracing your new identity.

You Are Supernatural

Every believer should understand: you are not just a normal human being. What you can accomplish depends on your source—and your source is God Himself.
Jesus didn't perform miracles just to show off. He was demonstrating what's possible for those who are connected to God. Didn't He say, "greater works than these will you do, because I go to My Father"?
God has not put limits on you—you put limits on yourself. The One who spoke the world into existence is the same One who lives in you.

What Happened at Salvation?

At salvation, three important things happened:

  • God came to dwell in you
  • God placed His seal of ownership on your life
  • You were empowered to live a Christian life

Romans 8:14-17 tells us that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ. This comes with privileges: protection, provision, and access to everything God has.

Transformed from Death to Life

Romans 8:1-2 says, "There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus... For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death."

Being born again is just the beginning of an amazing journey with God. Every day with Him is new and different, full of unexpected twists and turns. But whatever God has for you is for your blessing, not your detriment.

Life Application

Living in the Spirit isn't about trying harder but depending more fully on the Holy Spirit. Many of us try to overcome sin through our own efforts—"I don't want to swear anymore; I don't want to drink anymore"—but "if we were strong enough, we would have done it already."

This week, I challenge you to:

  • Reflect on your identity in Christ. Have you truly embraced who you are as a child of God? Are you living with limitations that God hasn't placed on you?

  • Surrender to the Holy Spirit's guidance. Instead of trying harder in your own strength, acknowledge your need for His wisdom and power in every area of your life.

  • Extend grace to someone who doesn't deserve it. Just as Christ extended grace to you, find someone this week who needs grace and extend it freely.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Am I demonstrating the fruits of the Spirit in my daily interactions?

  • What impression do I leave when people encounter me?

  • Am I putting limits on what God can do through me?

  • In what areas do I need to depend more on the Holy Spirit and less on my own efforts?

Your life has already been transformed by the Holy Spirit. All you need to do is activate the grace that has been given to you to live a supernatural life in God.
